BALTIMORE, MARYLAND -- Whatever slight injury problems Olivia Ekpone had during the earlier part of the 2009 Track & Field season, she certainly overcame them at the State of Maryland Outdoor Track & Field 4A Championships.

Ekpone is the 2008 State of Maryland Outdoor Track & Field 4A Champion in the 100, 200, and 400 meters.  Poised to win each of these titles once again, the sophomore sensation sprint star posted a time of 54.24 seconds and obtained a second straight title in the 400-meters.  She added a second gold medal as a member of her 4x400-meter relay team, and two individual silver medals in both the 100 and 200-meter events. 

"It just felt amazing to win the 400 for the second consecutive year, especially when you run your race the way you plan," she said.

Olivia will compete next at the 2009 World Youth T&F Trials being held June 30 - July 1 in Ypsilanti, Michigan hoping to earn her spot as a member of Team USA.  And if selected, she will compete in Bressanone, Italy at the 6th IAAF World Youth Championships, taking place July 8-12, 2009.  Of course, judging her past elite level performances this season, she has a great chance to make this team.
